Date: 29 June 2022
Concerns about rumours and media reports that speculate on the cause of death in the Tavern Tragedy incident, which happened early on Sunday, 26 June 2022, at Scenery Park, East London, has been raised by the South African Police Services (SAPS) management in the Eastern Cape.
SAPS forensic investigators are still looking into the deaths of 21 children at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, as was plainly stated in a statement issued by SAPS on Monday regarding the ongoing investigations.
All exhibit specimens were then transferred to the forensic laboratory for toxicity testing after investigations were completed in the building structure where the incident is said to have occurred and in the bodies where autopsies were performed.
Any informal and unofficial information that is not disclosed by the South African Police Service must be regarded as false and misleading to the public and the affected family of the deceased until the forensic laboratory's work is finished.
In this context, the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, issued a warning against the disseminating of false information since it may cast doubt on police investigations and cause confusion. "As previously stated, the appropriate authority will inform the family and members of the public at the right time and when an official report has been made available by the experts. Lt Gen Mene stated, "We urge people to avoid making erroneous judgments that hinder our investigations.
This incident aroused popular curiosity and sent shockwaves throughout the world. Spreading fake news for engagements and viewpoints is incredibly insensitive since it delicately affects the affected families.
The SAPS requests that anyone with information they think they can provide that will help the continuing investigation contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
