A 67-year-old renter was arrested after a quarrel with her landlord over rent money resulted in his death by suffocation. According to Free State police spokesperson Brig Motantsi Makhele, the argument took place on Wednesday night. The renter was sitting on the balcony with her landlord's wife when the 63-year-old landlord came, accusing her of not paying rent and threatening to off her electricity.
An altercation erupted as he entered the main home on his way to the main switch in the bedroom. “The argument allegedly led to an exchange of blows and the two fought in the bedroom where the 63-year-old held the tenant down on top of the bed, strangling her. The tenant managed to reach for a glass plate and allegedly smashed it against the 63-year-old’s head.”
According to Makhele, this resulted in a severe cut on the neck and significant blood. He was proclaimed dead at the spot despite the fact that emergency services were contacted. The lady was detained on suspicion of murder and will appear in the Bloemfontein magistrate's court shortly. Lt-Gen Baile Motswenyane, Free State provincial commissioner, asked people to come up with alternative dispute resolution methods. People were asked to attempt to communicate properly and resolve matters correctly without resorting to physical confrontation.
It is hard to believe that things can sky rocket to a point where people engage in a physical fight all because of rent money, it is true that the rate of living is increasing in South Africa, that much can be seen with the cooking oil price hike in the local stores but to fight with a person just because you can not afford to pay them is just wrong. It might be that this woman never expected things to turn out like this, she just got out of the frying pan and went straight into the blazing fire. Do you think it was wise for the tenant and the landlord to fight over rent money? Let us know what are your thoughts on this matter.
