The fire was addressed at China Mall in West Street not long after 10:00, said EMER-G-MED specialist Kyle van Reenen.
Talking from the scene, Van Reenen said paramedics had seen individuals caught in the plan breaking windows and attempting to move out, to create some distance from the flares. Firemen had the decision to ensure these individuals, yet others stayed caught in the plan.
"The fire is all through the entire plan, spreading floor by floor," said Van Reenen.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services specialist Robert Mckenzie authenticated there was a fire, and that two fire engines were at the scene. He had no further subtleties at the hour of transport.
