Police arrest 20 people for contravening immigration act and employing undocumented foreigners

Marabastad, in downtown Pretoria, was raided by police and officials from Home Affairs.

The raid resulted in the ultimate arrest of 20 people for contravening the immigration act as well as employing undocumented foreign nationals. 

The raid was carried out in response to criminal activities and to assess compliance with labour and immigration laws.

Similar operations have been carried out in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Mpumalanga.

The raid also resulted in the closure of Marabastad market. The market was closed for not being compliant with by laws. 

This was confirmed by department of labour official Teboho Thejane.

Thejane said traders at the market have been prohibited from using the building due to lack of firefighting equipment at strategic locations.

They were also found to be operating in premises with open electrical wires, non-compliance with electrical installation which poses a risk of electrocution and fire.

It was reported that more raids like this are also expected in different parts of the country.
