Stokvel scam ends in brutal death of fake robber
22nd Sep 2021
Christmas is coming, and it’s that time of the year when greed takes over and people known to be honest and reliable, go crazy.
This is what happened to an aunt and a nephew who came up with a plan to cheat stokvel members.
The plan was simple.
The unnamed aunt’s nephew, Sibusiso Khoza-Msha, would be given a secret phone call after the stokvel meeting, and all he had to do was to pretend to mug her.
He had to rush up to her as if he was mugging her, grab the aunt’s handbag with the stokvel’s monthly contribution of R8,200, and go to the nearby mall where he would later meet her.
Well, that was the plan.
But the plan fell apart when the woman who was walking with the aunt saw the thief and screamed “Vimba!” at the top of her lungs. This brought residents to the scene and they chased Sibusiso – and assaulted him badly.
Sibusiso’s mother, Jesta Nkosi, said when the mob realised that Sibusiso had lost consciousness they splashed him with a bucket of water.
“When he finally opened his eyes, he confessed the plan. The aunt called her son and when he arrived at the scene he assaulted Sibusiso further and Sibusiso lost consciousness again,” she said.
Sibusiso died four days later at Pholosong Hospital.
Jestai added that even though her son was a drug addict he didn’t deserve to be killed like an animal especially by his cousin.
“When I questioned her she confessed that Sibusiso told her that he had money problems and together they came up with the plan,” she explained.
Kwa-Thema police spokesperson, Constable Nkululeko Magudulelo, confirmed that they are investigating a case of murder.
“We condemn the actions of the residents who took the law into their own hands which led to the death of the victim. Anyone who is found to have had a hand in the assault will be arrested and charged with murder,” he added.
