Johannesburg EMS Battles Underground Fire – 3km Of Electricity Cables Affected

The City of Johannesburg's Emergency Services are battling an underground fire that broke out on Monday, 28 March, at the intersection of Ntemi Pilisio and Anderson Streets in the CBD.

Michael Sun, Johannesburg MMC for Environment Infrastructure Service Department (EISD), said City Power was notified of the underground fire around 7:00 a.m. on Monday.

According to City Power, the fire has affected approximately three kilometers of underground electricity cabling. As a result, power outages have been reported in New Centre, Village Deep, Park Central, and Wemmer.

As soon as the smoke has cleared, City Power will be able to start working on restoring power to the affected areas.

As of now, Johannesburg authorities are unable to provide an estimated time for power restoration.

At 16:47, City Power posted a video of the equipment EMS was using to suck smoke from the underground tunnels affected by the fire and stated that technicians are still unable to assess the blaze's impact.

No injuries have been reported, according to City of JHB EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
