Since crime has become an everyday thing in Mzansi, many "Neighbourhood Watch Patrols" have been created to help people feel safe in their communities and properties. The work of neighbourhood watch patrollers is to protect citizens with local security measures available to them or to alert the police in case they notice any suspicious activity which could lead to a crime. In other words, these watch patrollers exist to keep us safe.
However, as with most security jobs in the country, these watch patrollers are at risk of being attacked by criminals while doing their duties. No doubt that it is a risky job trying to prevent crimes yet these watch patrollers do it diligently regardless of the consequences.
Concerning crime in Mzansi, two members of a neighbourhood watch patrol team were reportedly shot by a man whom they were escorting. According to reports, it was gathered that the alleged suspect was driving a silver VW polo when he was stopped by the neighbourhood watch patrol at a checkpoint in Hazelmere - KZN. The suspect revealed that he was visiting his girlfriend in the area, however, since the driver's face was new in the area, the patrol team offered to escort him to his destination.
Things took a violent turn during the escort when the driver of the silver VW polo stopped after a short distance from the checkpoint and opened fire on the Kia Seltos that was escorting him before driving off.
It was also gathered that a member of the neighbourhood watch patrol contacted members of Reaction Unit South Africa. Reaction officers arrived at the scene and met a victim of the gunshot incident with a bullet wound on his shoulder.
The 36-year-old male was treated for his injuries before being transported to the hospital by ambulance. A person was shot in the leg but was transported to a medical facility before the arrival of First Responders
Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search for the vehicle however no arrests were made. The two members of the neighbourhood watch patrol offered to help the suspect but he repaid them with gunshot injuries, this incident just goes to show the danger that our law enforcement officers face and it is paramount that we give them a proper appreciation for their duties.
