Specialist Engineer Arrested For 'Siphoning R103m' From Absa Bank'

The Hawks apprehended an Absa specialized engineer who reportedly fraudulently moved R103 million into six separate bank accounts over a four-month period. Xolela Masebeni, a Sandton Absa engineer, reportedly moved the funds between September and December 2021.

According to Hawks spokesperson Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu, the situation was reported to the authorities by the bank following an internal probe. "On Wednesday, January 19, Masebeni was successfully tracked down and apprehended in Queenstown, Eastern Cape," she stated. He was accused with stealing and appeared the next day at Komani (Queenstown) magistrate's court. The 30-year-old guy was remanded in custody awaiting further investigation. "The case has been moved to the Palm Ridge specialist commercial crimes court and is scheduled to appear in court on January 27 for a legal representative and bail application," Mulamu added. The Hawks have not ruled out more arrests or charges.
