The bakkie was overloaded with 27 passengers, according to provincial transport department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi.
"All of the victims were males who were traveling as passengers. The driver, as well as the passengers, were gravely hurt "he stated
"The driver of the vehicle may have lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into the side. The crash is already the subject of an investigation. One of the topics the inquiry will look into is overloading."
Seven guys died on the spot, while two more died in the hospital from their injuries.
Vusi Shongwe, Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC, expressed condolences to the victims' families and asked motorists to follow the rules of the road.
