Cornered thug shoots himself to avoid facing angry crowd
Instead of facing the mob of angry community members, a cornered thug chose death.
He took his own life with the gun he used to rob his victims.
Hawker Enos Mudau was at the busy traffic circle next to the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court when he spotted a man struggling with a woman in a Nissan NP 200 bakkie.
“The man was armed with a gun. He forced the woman out of the vehicle,” said Enos.
At this moment, Enos said that a trolley pusher intervened to help the woman, and a scuffle broke out between the gunman and the good Samaritan.
“They were wrestling for the gun. The man was shot in the foot but community members who heard the gunshot rushed to the scene and surrounded the area,” said Enos.
The writing was on the wall for the robber. He was surrounded with no route to escape, and was seemingly destined to face the wrath of the angry crowd.
“When the gunman realised he was cornered, he shot himself in the head and died right there at the scene.”
Hawker Terrence Mulaudzi who was at the scene said he has never been so terrified.
“I was busy serving a customer when I heard gunshots. Then suddenly there were many people,” he said.
“The bloodied man, who must have been dead, was just lying there. He was stoned and struck with different objects by community members. It was a terrible scene that will stay in my mind for a long time.”
The Thohoyandou police who attended the scene said: “A firearm and two live rounds were found next to the suspect and four new cellphones were also found in his possession.”
The man who had been shot in the foot was taken to the local clinic for treatment.
The police have opened cases of attempted murder, robbery and inquest.
