Car Highjacking Hotspots in South Africa

Crime statistics for quarter 1 2021\2022 show another increase in highjackings across the country.

This was revealed by National Commissioner Khehla Sithole and his officers in Parliament on Friday 19 November. A total of 973 hijackings were reported across the country between July and September compared to 803 hijackings during the same period last year.

During level four lockdown, between 28 June and 25 July 2021, highjackings stood at 1497. This figure increased to 1614 between 26 July and 12 September, because the government relaxed covid regulations which led to more crime being committed.

The bulk of hijacking cases were reported in highly populated areas. Most highjacking cases were reported in Gauteng (2435), followed by the Western Cape at 838 and Kwazulu Natal at 733. The table below highlights that are hijacking hotspots and it also shows the number of reported cases at each Police Station.
