The Western Cape South African Police Services (SAPS) is committed to tackling the issue of violence against women and children. This was demonstrated once again with the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect on Monday, January 23rd, 2023 on charges of rape and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 at around 9:40 am, when the 75-year-old victim, who is known to the suspect, was at her residence in Wilson Street, Riversdale. The suspect allegedly forced his way into her home, assaulted her, raped her, and then fled the scene. The victim was able to raise the alarm and alert her neighbours, who then contacted the police.
The police arrived at the scene and took the victim to the hospital for medical care. A team of officers from the Riversdale police and the Mossel Bay Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences (FCS) unit was then assembled to search for the suspect. Their efforts paid off when they were able to track him down on Monday morning, January 23rd, 2023. He was arrested and remains in police custody, and is set to appear in the Riversdale Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 to face the charges against him.
