On Friday, the 21st of January 2022, members of the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team detained a 30-year-old lady for trading in illegal cigarettes and violating the Immigration Act.
The Hawks received information about illegal cigarettes being sold at a residence in Malale hamlet, just outside the Pafuri border.
A multi-disciplinary operation involving the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, and the South African National Defence Force resulted in the discovery and seizure of boxes carrying Remington Gold cigarettes with an estimated street value of R43 684.00.
On the 24th of January 2022, the suspect is scheduled to appear at the Musina Magistrate's Court. Other probable outstanding suspects are still being sought by the Hawks.
Unlike legal cigarettes, illegal cigarettes are not subject to the same safety regulations as legal cigarettes, and hence may include foreign particles that are harmful to one's health. Smoking is one of the primary causes of lung cancer, and it has been linked to Covid-19 problems.
