KIDNAP KINGPIN HOSTED LAVISH PARTY WHILE HIS HOSTAGE WAS IMPRISONED A FEW MILES AWAY
Last month, an extravagant party was being held at the Lucky 7 Lifestyle Café in Daveyton. The glamorous event was packed with happy people drinking cocktails and dancing the night away.
What the guests did not know was that the host of the exclusive party had kidnapped a businessman on the M1 highway, Smit offramp on Wednesday 17 November.
Three henchmen were tasked to guard the victim in a room in an RDP house in Putfontein in Ekurhuleni to make sure he did not escape while their boss attended the event.
The family quickly learned about their loved one’s kidnap through social media, after a video clip of him being captured was posted and began to make the rounds.
A ransom of R6 million was demanded from the family for his safe release.
But the family couldn’t afford that amount. All they could do was to pray for his safe return.
For three days, the kidnappers ransacked the businessman’s bank account by withdrawing money at different ATMs, withdrawing almost R20,000 in total.
On Saturday night, champagne flowed until the early hours of the morning at the bash at the Lucky 7 Lifestyle Café.
As the party hit its peak, a team of detectives arrived at the venue and quietly arrested its host. They had managed to trace him through an intelligence-driven operation.
Although he was arrested, sources close to the case said the party went on as no one in the crowd noticed that their host had been taken in by the detectives.
Police also arrested five of his co-conspirators, including a man who claimed that the RDP house where the victim was kept belonged to him.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello confirmed the arrest.
On Sunday 21 November the businessman was safely reunited with his family unharmed, six days after his ordeal began.
He told one member of his family that he thought he would never be released as his kidnappers demanded an amount of money that he didn’t have.
Before his arrest, the kidnapper had two other active cases of kidnappings where he was arrested and released on bail.
According to a police source close to the case, there is a high possibility that the main suspect is linked to many other cases of kidnappings in the province.
