Cape Town - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has invited the condemning of a Gugulethu lady indicted for cheating the RCS of thousands of rand through a progression of unlawful shopping binges.


The Bellville Commercial Crimes Court gave over a five-year sentence to 48-year-old Cynthia Phela following her conviction on three counts of extortion.


Phela was captured on three unique events somewhere in the range of 2019 and 2020 for utilizing deceitful RCS charge cards to buy things at stores at Tygervalley retail outlet, Mitchells Plain and Somerset West.


NPA common representative Eric Ntabazalila said: "The court heard that on October 5, 2019, Phela utilizing the name Nelisile Fortunate Sikhosana bought a Playstation 4 Pro worth R7 999 and an Eurolux fan worth R219 at Game in Tygervalley.


"An examination later uncovered that the card had a place with Ruchalle van Schalkwyk, who questioned the buy.

"She was consequently captured by a safety officer while in the store. In the second episode in June 2019, Phela endeavored to utilize a Sapphire Reserve Bank card at CNA store in Stellenbosch. The card was connected to a Game store card account enlisted under the name of AB Hoffman, in any case, it had a place with Ms N Wilson.


"She utilized the card to purchase food at a corporate retailer in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, worth R6 529. On July 15 2019, the RCS Fraud Prevention Unit got a call from Ms N Wilson, questioning buys made on her Game store card."
