Tragic | Child headed household suffers and lives from social grant

There is a handful of child headed households which are unknown of all over the world. These are households whereby children have no guardians. This article talks of a family who suffers nothing less than a child headed household.

This is a family from Ga-Rapitsi village who has lost their parents during 2010 and 2011. The family allegedly lived off social grant, which is not enough. The MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale accompanied by Greater Letaba Municipality Mayor Peter Matlou, visited the family to hand over food parcels, school uniforms and other basic amenities.

The elders of the eight siblings, Maria Mokumo, allegedly shared with the journalist a little about her family. She said that she had to drop out of school at of 16 to take care of her baby, shortly after giving birth.

“When my parents passed away, their responsibilities fell on my shoulders. I fell pregnant during that period and had to drop out of school because I did not have any guidance. I was in Grade 10 and I stopped going to school. I felt burdened. I do wish to go back to school nonetheless”. She mentioned.

She says that her pregnancy was due to have little or no knowledge about intercourse. She also had no guidance from elders.

She is now a 21 year old woman who hopes to improve her home situation and set a good precedent for her siblings, although she has no education. She wishes to go back to school despite her age. She believes that dropping out was not a wise decision.

The family was promised by the social development group that social workers have activated the family preservation, foster care and parenting skills programmes to assist the family.

The elder sibling says that they appreciate the help however, they wish that the development group will keep their promise and do good by them.
