Gunfire assassinated the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ward 20 councilor candidate in Msunduzi Municipality. On Sunday afternoon, Thulani Shangase was shot in Pietermaritzburg's Herwood suburb of Caluza. According to EFF Umgungundlovu Region Chairperson Mzwakhe Mpulo, Shangase was killed as he was about to meet with party operatives.
Mpulo claimed to have gone to the company where they were scheduled to meet.“We have been told by people who were present at the meeting that he received a phone call and went outside to answer it and that is when he was shot,” he added. Mpulo added that they are unable to determine whether his death was related to politics, but they are waiting for authorities to examine what may have led to the killing.
"We know there is a lot of political intolerance in the Edendale region, but we don't know if this is connected to politics. This is a big setback for the party. He was a diligent worker who was motivated to assist [the residents of] Ward 20. We were hoping that the EFF would win ward 20 in the next local government elections."
He added that they will not rest until the truth regarding why he was murdered is revealed. He added that they will put pressure on the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the event. Mpulo indicated that they will pay the family a visit today. According to Sergeant Sfiso Gwala of the Plessislaer Authorities Department, police are investigating a murder inquiry. So yet, no one has been captured.
Being in politics is like walking on land mines, one mistake and its over. There is a lot of competition in politics which makes them extremely dangerous, there are many people who do not play fair in this life they resort to any means just to eliminate their competition, the less the competition, the higher are the odds for victory and this could be what happened to Thulani Shangase, may his soul rest in peace.
