Young father dies when car rolls
Family members and friends support each other on the scene.
THE town of Slang River is in shock after a beloved young man suddenly and tragically crashed on Sunday afternoon.
The car in which he was a passenger left the road and rolled.
The car came to a stop in the field.
Viaan Hoogbaard (32), the victim, was lying outside the car. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and other passenger were transported to the hospital in Riversdale for treatment. They were later discharged.
The three young men were apparently on their way home from the Upper River to the Lower River when the accident happened.
Hoogbaard, the father of a 10-year-old girl, worked at the local municipality's electricity department in Heidelberg.
He was a very talented rugby and cricket player who excelled for the local clubs.
The driver, a 32-year-old relative of the victim, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The car left the road and collided with a pole before it overturned, rolled and came to a halt some distance further in the field.
Hoogbaard's mother, Lenie van der Merwe, was with other family members at the accident scene and burst into tears from time to time.
The mommy's family members and friends tried to comfort her.
According to AO Alroy Windvogel, police spokesperson, the cops are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
