Road Accident

Another minibus taxi crashes killing passengers on board

Another horrific accident involving a minibus taxi has occurred killing at least 7 people.

The complex tragedy involved a fully loaded minibus taxi heading to Cape Town from the Eastern Cape, a broken-down bus and the vehicle that had arrived to help it.

Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose said first the taxi rammed into back of the bus, knocking it off the road.

“This was at about 2am on the R61 just outside Aberdeen, 20km towards Beaufort West.

“A fully loaded Toyota minibus, heading to the Western Cape from the east, crashed into the stationary bus, which was carrying 60 occupants and had mechanical problems that were being repaired. The taxi then rammed into the back of the recovery vehicle, knocking it off the road also.”

Bhinqose said the taxi overturned and six people in it, including the driver, died on the scene.

A seventh victim succumbed to his injuries on arrival at the hospital.

“The deceased include three adults, who were two women and a man, and four children, two of them girls.

“The injured people were taken to Aberdeen Hospital and Midlands Hospital in Graaff Reinet for further medical management.” Bhinqose said a case of culpable homicide would be opened for further investigation into the collision.
