Over thirty cellphones, contraband items, traditional medicines, and dagga worth a street value of over 12-thousand rand have been confiscated during a raid at Qalakabusha correctional center in Empangeni In KwaZulu-Natal.
The national commissioner of Correctional services Makgothi Thobakgale was part of the raid. The correctional facility has in recent years seen several prison breaks. Recently, the correctional facility has seen four inmates escaping with three of them still at large.
According to the department, the raid started at 3 am and they found 37 cellphones, traditional medicines pots, one-plate stoves, and cell phone chargers. Makgothi Thobakgale said that he was pleased and sadden at the same time to discover such contraband.
The raid was prompted after the alarms were raised over the security of the facility and the discovery validate the call. More raids around the province are expected in the coming weeks and months to clean up the province from corrupt officials and illegal activities.
