Letter from Mount Frere: Pastor accused of raping another pastor’s child
It was exactly this reason why rural women sacrificed their daily chores on Thursday and flocked to the Mount Ayliff Magistrates Court to oppose bail for Pastor Vez Pakade of the God’s Power Family Church who has been charged with raping a 16-year-old school girl.
At this time of the year and with the rains above us, you can expect this lot to be working the fields with their hoes or even leading a span of oxen to the fields to till the soil.
But on Thursday, they were so angry that court orderlies had to lock the gates to manage a potentially volatile situation.
What made them even more angry was the sight of a small group of women congregants of the church claiming the pastor has no case to answer.
Grandmother Nokwakha Fikeni said her grandchild was going to school at Zanokhanyo Primary School to submit some school work when the pastor intercepted her.
He allegedly forced her into a nearby thick bush where she was raped again and again.
‘We are very hurt because of this rape done by Pastor Pakade, a man who calls himself a man of God.
“Sadly the child was raped right outside her school. The child says just before she got to her school she realised that she had dropped her calculator.
“When she turned to look for the calculator, she saw the pastor picking up the phone.”
When she asked Pakade to return her calculator he said ‘Ngena emotweni’ (Get in the car) and when she got into the car, the driver sped off into nearby bushes.
The victim is the grandchild of Reverend Sabatha Fikeni, a respected member of the Mount Ayliff community.
Reverend MD Hlongwane of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Mount Frere Circuit did his best to calm the angry villagers.
‘I know you are all very angry but I am appealing to all of you as Christians not to create a storm within you now that we are going through this storm.
“We have asked the court to allow the close members of the family to be allowed into the court because a minor cannot be expected to be in court without her family.”
In the latest crime stats in South Africa, more than 9 500 case of raped were reported to South African police stations between July and September 2021.
