The Distraught families demand justice for their relatives who died from suspected food poisoning at a funeral. The Gauteng department of health confirmed that it is dealing with cases of a cluster outbreak of suspected food poisoning in the West Rand. The department of health was said to be working with the West Rand District to investigate the incident last week. The poisoning is thought to have originated at an old woman's funeral. Funeral services were scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13th.
Food was served around 11 a.m., and reports of abrupt vomiting and diarrhea began at 4 p.m. on the same day. There were rumors of eight cases of patients with symptoms and one fatality on Sunday evening. The spokesperson of the investigation stated that 29 informed and verified cases had been hospitalized and treated at both public and private clinics and that the results of tests obtained to determine the cause were awaited. Concerning the two suspected deaths, she stated that the district health department was also awaiting the cause of death report.
"Water and food samples were also obtained, and the district health services is awaiting the results. The investigation into the event is still underway "She stated. The community is shaken after the incident as it is currently not known as to whether the food developed some sort of bacteria or the food was poison and in that case, nobody has an idea as to who could have done such an act.
