Katleho Moeketsi, 24, was found guilty of murdering gogo Louisa Potgieter, and the High Court in Bloemfontein has given him a severe punishment for his crime.
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, on August 25, 2021, the police were notified that a corpse had been discovered in an open veld not far from the Morojaneng settlement in the state of Free State.
He said that the corpse of the 64-year-old gogo was recovered by the police drenched in blood.
"Emergency Medical Services and Police Forensic Analysts were also called to the site, and the person was later determined to be deceased," according to the report. "A watchful citizen of Dewetsdorp who observed the stolen Volkswagen Golf in Mangaung and promptly told the police led to the arrest of the offender," said Covane. "The resident contacted the police after seeing the stolen vehicle."
He said that the suspect was taken into custody as he was driving the victim's white Volkswagen Golf.
According to Covane, inquiries into the case led to Moeketsi facing trial for the crime, and after making a number of court appearances, he was found guilty of the crime.
On Friday, May 13, he was given a sentence that included 15 years in jail for the offense of robbery with aggravating circumstances and 25 years in prison for the count of murder.
