Temba Dube abandons bail, rejects legal aid
The man who confessed to kidnapping and killing several women around Polokwane in Limpopo has abandoned his bail application.
Themba Prince Willard Dube, 36, is facing seven counts of kidnapping and seven counts of murder.
Dube was arrested on Saturday 7 November in hospital where he went for a gun wound treatment.
According to police, Dube lured his victims by promising them jobs but instead kidnapped them, raped and murdered them.
“I only want to tell the truth,” he said.
He was remanded in custody until 27 January 2022.
Dube, a Zimbabwean national who admitted to being in the country illegally was initially arrested for possession of a stolen cellphone. The police established that it belonged to a woman from Lebowakgomo who was missing.
Although he was not asked to plead, Dube has already confessed to kidnapping and murdering seven women – Sarah Mothiba, Eva Makhura, Mpho Senyatsi, Andrea Cholo, Jane Letsoalo and Moleboheng Mothibeli who is from Lesotho and his Zimbabwean compatriot, Chisimango Gumbo. The women are aged between 25 and 48.
Seven decomposed bodies were found dumped in the bushes around Polokwane and forensic investigations are yet to identify them.
Dube left his home village in Matebeleland in south western Zimbabwe in 2019 and came into South Africa illegally at the Beit Bridge border where after he launched his reign of terror.
Even after the magistrate advised him to get free legal assistance, Dube was adamant that he does not need help.
“I know what happened and I’m ready to tell the truth so that everyone knows what happened. There is no need to get a lawyer,” he said.
Gumbo’s cousin, Tanaka Chigohuti said Dube’s evil deeds have fanned the fires of xenophobia among South Africans.
“It is people like Dube who make foreigners look bad. Even though he is from my country I will not condone what he did,” saisd Chigohuti.
Nkarareng Rakgoale, the MEC for Social Development said the department will assist the victims’ families with burial arrangements once their bodies have been identified.
