It is no secret that there is corruption in South African jails – but the true scale of it may never be known.
After being found attempting to smuggle narcotics and other illegal commodities into the Durban Correctional Centre in Westville yesterday, one of the department's officers and a private citizen were detained and are now behind bars, according to the department.
A vehicle with two occupants was stopped by patrolling officials shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday morning while attempting to enter the Westville facility, according to department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
The following goods were located in the vehicle, according to Nxumalo: 1 cellphone, 1 charger, 3 parcels of dagga (weight unknown), 924 white and blue capsules of whoonga, and 50 white round tablets.
According to the department, safe and secure correctional facilities are feasible.
