Pretoria: Yesterday, a Volkswagen Polo sedan collided with the side of an articulated truck on the N4 toll road close to Ngodwana, killing five people.
A spokesperson for Mpumalanga's department of community safety, security, and liaison Moeti Mmusi claimed the automobile flipped over on the shoulder of the road afterward, killing all five individuals inside.
A short time later, an Isuzu bakkie collided with the truck. The motorist suffered minor injuries. An infant and two females are among the victims, Mmusi added.
The cause of the crash is unclear at this time, but an investigation is underway, he said.
While this is going on, Vusi Shongwe, Mpumalanga's MEC for community safety, security, and liaison, has issued a renewed plea for drivers to exercise extreme caution "to avert death and injuries as a result of avoidable crashes."
Deaths of this kind are unacceptable on our highways. He emphasized that most collisions could be prevented if drivers just "obeyed the regulations and drove as cautiously as possible."
Shongwe also wished the injured driver a swift recovery and offered his "heartfelt condolences" to the families of the deceased.
A bus crash on the R37 Lydenburg Road in Mbombela earlier this month required the treatment of at least 60 persons by emergency personnel.
The incident occurred at about 7:07 in the morning.
Emer-G-Med Paramedics Kyle van Reenen reported that the passenger liner had veered off the road and overturned.
Sixty individuals were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate, and "immediately additional services were despatched," he said.
According to Van Reenen, the patients were taken to other hospitals for additional care. there were no recorded deaths at the time.
