Why do people pay Lobola?

It’s actually thanking the family for raising that woman, and forming a relationship between two families that aren’t related, that’s the motive that I know behind lobola. To thank them for raising someone who’s going to take care of you and to initiate a relationship between your family with her family, as a man (Provider & protector) culturally .

Lobola wasn’t based on money but livestocks. The modernisation of our African customs is making the meaning of those customs to fade away. Assures the females family that where their daughter is going she will be well taken care of.

Look at it like this, would you give away your daughter to someone who doesn’t show any form of security or any means to cater for his wife and family?

To show deep appreciation that you love your future wife.

I’m not opposed to lobola itself, I’m opposed to the amounts family’s demand for doing their job, five thousand should be enough for a lunch for two families to get to know each other. What's your take on the topic?
