Zimbabwean Lady Pleads With SA Government To Do This Before They Can Go Home.
Chaos is expected after the 31st of December this year where over 180 000 ZEP holders will no longer be allowed to stay in the country as their documentation has expired. Those who will be affected have spoken about their worry of going back home and how things will change for them.
A Lady known as Sylvia Dobi came to South Africa in 2008 as an asylum seeker. She was granted the ZEP after two years which meant that she could remain the country for 10 years. In the past 10 years however, Sylvia started her own local life where she could find a job, open store accounts and even a bank account. But all this is about to come to an end as the bank has given her until the end of June for her to bring another permit or they close her account.
Sylvia says that she now has a life here and there is nothing for her to do in Zimbabwe when she goes back. More impacts of the expiration of the permits include that more children won't be able to start grade 1 or 8 as their parents would now be undocumented. Clearly this affects way more than just people going back home. They will now have to start over again in their home country where they have not lived in 10 years which will be hard.
Sylvia Dobi has asked the government of South Africa to atleast give them two years so that they can prepare and plan to go home. Sylvia explained that all her life is here and she doesn't even know where she is going to start when she goes back to Zimbabwe.
The situation facing ZEP holder is a tough one. Maybe ZEP holders should be allowed to get a permanent residence since they had been allowed to stay in the country for a long time now and legally. The government should therefore focus on those that have recently come to the country without any documents and commit crimes.
At the end of the day, Zimbabweans are also people and they deserve to be treated as humans. South Africans should atleast forgive ZEP holders and allow them to stay in South Africa.
