At least 15 people had to be attended to in several Gqeberha hospitals at the weekend following an accident at the intersection of Papenkuils Street and Cape Road on Saturday evening.
A collision between a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Hilux occurred at about 5.30pm on the corner of the busy intersection shortly before load-shedding hit the Linton Grange area.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Kabega Park detectives were investigating a case of reckless or negligent driving.
“A taxi was travelling in Cape Road towards Westering and as it approached the intersection at Cape and Papenkuils roads, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie allegedly made a U-turn in front of the taxi.
“Both vehicles collided, resulting in the taxi overturning. Several passengers in the taxi were injured and taken to various hospitals,” she said.
The wrecked and overturned Quantum which lay on the side of the road was surrounded by debris and fragments of shattered glass. Gardmed roads operation manager Eugene Muller said the cause of the accident was unclear at this stage.
“The only thing I can confirm is that 15 people were involved, all of whom have been sent to various hospitals in the city.
“Fourteen people were in the Quantum and one in the bakkie,” Muller said. By 7pm, the majority of the debris had been cleared. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident, is asked to contact Kabega Park police on 082-302-6159, Crime Stop on 08600-10111 or the nearest police station, or send information via MYSAPSAPP.
