Men often complain about women being too confusing…
They say that when a woman says “no” she means “yes” and that it is difficult to decode women’s language.
While there might be some truth to that, men are not diametrically different.
There is this urban legend that men are straightforward, that men say what they mean and they mean what they say, but my experience taught me differently.
Here are some real-life examples which contradict this statement.
Men can be as confusing as us women, if not more, when it comes to dating and relationships, even if they do not like to admit it.
So here are 8 things men say and the real meaning behind them.
1. I am “not ready” for a relationship
Real meaning: I don’t want a relationship with you, because you are not the one for me but I am not brave enough to tell you that bluntly.
I wrote an extensive post on when a guy says he is not ready for a relationship.
2. I really like you but
Real meaning: I like you but not enough to date you. Nevertheless, I don’t mind you being a hook-up.
3. “I just want to be friends” while flirting with you
Real meaning: I definitely don’t want to be with you but I keep flirting with you because I love your attention and want to keep you hooked on me in case I change my mind someday, I just want to keep myself entertained and love having you as an option.
4. I don’t do relationships
Real meaning: I hide behind this excuse whenever I don’t want to commit to someone because I want to keep my options open in case someone better comes along. You are definitely not my first choice but I want to keep hooking up with you.
5. You deserve better than me
Real meaning: I think you are great but I know you are not for me. I don’t have the courage to tell you that I want to break up because I am not attracted to you or because I met someone else so I tell you that I am leaving because I do not deserve you.
6. It’s not you, it’s me
Real meaning: There is something I really dislike about you and I cannot see myself with you so I tell you that I am the issue to avoid hurting your feelings.
7. I don’t want to hurt you
Real meaning: I don’t want you to get too attached to me while we are hooking up with you because I don’t feel the same way about you so I will eventually leave.”
8. I don’t know where this relationship is going
Real meaning: I may have liked you at first, but now that I got to know you better, I am having doubts about you; I even think you may not be the right person for me so I am preparing you mentally for a breakup.
