In Lagos, Lagos State, a customary court has dissolved the 20-year-old marriage of a priest, Chijoke Ogu, and his wife, Chineye Ogu, citing the latter's claimed intransigence. The couple had been married for 20 years.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while giving the verdict, the court president, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, stated that because the petitioner pressed on divorce despite repeated interventions, the court had no choice but to grant his request.

Mr Chijoke Ogu and his wife Chineye Ogu's marriage has been declared dissolved by the court today.

"From this day forward, the two of you will no longer be husband and wife.

"All of you should be allowed to go your different ways without being harassed by the others. We wish you continued success in your future endeavors," the court said.

On the petitioner's behalf, Koledoye ordered them to assume full responsibility for the upkeep and education of their only kid.

President Buhari ordered Chijoke to pay N250,000 in severance compensation to his wife so that she could resume her life as a single parent.

earlier in his petition for divorce, Chijoke pleaded with the court to dissolve his 20-year marriage, stating that his wife was difficult and refused to follow his directions.

"After Chineye gave birth to our child, she insisted that her mother come to see her. I disagreed with her since her mother will be a financial burden on us as a result of her advanced age and illness.

"On top of that, I don't have any money to offer to her mother or to buy items for her before she leaves."

I was furious when she refused to listen to me and eventually sent for her mother without my permission. She came to live with us for a period of two months.

"After her mother left, my mother came to visit, but my wife had a different attitude toward her and refused to feed her on several occasions.

"I went to her hometown to inform her family, but she refused to reconsider her mind."

Chineye, in her defense, claimed that she was being stubborn, but asserted that she had the right to select who stayed with her after she gave birth to her child.

We have a tradition in our family that the wife's mother assists in the care of the infant.

In the beginning, he proposed that his older sister come and reside with me. "I declined since it will not look good on my record if I send his sister on errands," she explained.

She said that her husband had invited his mother to the party without her consent.

She also claimed that her husband had abandoned her and their child for more than two years, alleging that the elders in his church had encouraged him to end the relationship.
