This week we met Mr and Mrs Mnyango from Mtubatuba in Kwazulu Natal who had chosen to come onto the show to show us what a traditional wedding truly looked like. It was the perfect end to Heritage month, showing us how things are done in the Zulu culture and they both looked beautiful throughout.
The story of how they met however, might have you divided. He was and is a taxi driver and she was a disgruntled passenger who wanted him to turn down the volume. He despised her and she returned the feelings, but somehow, after a car accident that involved the two of them, they ended up falling in love with each other. It's an odd way to meet but I would read that particular love story!
The groom was clear from the start. He wanted the wedding to be as authentic as possible to a Zulu wedding and he achieved this. From the clothing (or lack thereof in other cases) he made his vision come true. Everyone and everything looked amazing. They both knew what they were doing.
I loved getting to hear them sing songs I remember from my own upbringing. When there were ceremonies and it would be time to dig up the traditional clothing. I truly long for a time when we can get some of that back, minus the inherent misogyny that seems to come with it.
The bride was glowing all the way throughout as she spoke of her husband. It gave me joy that despite each of them having naysayers on either side of their family's, they persisted and succeeded in love. It is common that people doubt a love they don't understand, but it remains love.
I hope they will continue to be happy together! Congratulations Mr. And Mrs. Mnyango!
