South African lesbian couple, Antoinette (Vaivi) Swartz and Sape Maodi-Swartz, have taken a step towards marriage by paying bride price. Sape said their parents had been supportive of the union but she refused to reveal how much was paid. She said they wanted to follow tradition and marry like any other couple. She stated that the decision was taken so that their marriage would be respected in the African setting.
