1. Failure to complete high school
It doesn't seem right that couples who spend more time in education have a lower chance of being divorced. However, research says otherwise.
A result from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979), which looked at the marriage and divorce patterns of a cohort of young baby boomers, is highlighted on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website. According to the article:
"The chances of a marriage ending in divorce were lower for persons with greater education, with over 50% of marriages ending in divorce for those who did not complete high school compared to about 30% of marriages for college graduates."
2. Having a negative attitude about your partner
Certain interpersonal behaviors are referred to as the "four horsemen of the apocalypse" by John Gottman, a psychologist at the University of Washington and founder of the Gottman Institute. Because they predict divorce with frighteningly high accuracy:
Contempt is a feeling of inferiority toward your lover. (This is what Gottman refers to as the "kiss of death" in a relationship.)
Criticism is when you turn a behavior into a character assessment of your partner.
Playing the victim in stressful situations is called defensiveness.
Blocking dialogue by stonewalling.
