How To Pray For Your Future Spouse

Marriage is not just about a beautiful wedding party, a honeymoon in the country of your dreams, having a beautiful house and starting a family. Marriage is above all a sacred institution between two people who pledge to be one. People do not get married to separate! Marriage is supposed to bring joy, peace and happiness to both man and woman. The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favour from the Lord (Proverbs 18:22).

The fact is unfortunately very often ignored that a successful marriage must be built on solid foundations; a successful marriage must be prepared even before uttering the words: "Yes, I do!" And one of the ways to prepare for marriage is to do it prayerfully and involve God in it. Commit your work to the Lord, then it will succeed (Proverbs 16:3).

Here are some advices that will help you pray effectively for your future spouse:

Advice #1: Pray for his/her heart

Look beyond appearances: being active in a church does not reflect the true state of his/her heart. Pray that s/he will be a person after God's heart, a person who truly fears Him, honours Him and serves Him. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life (Proverbs 4:23).

Advice #2: Pray for his/her character

Ask the Lord to grant him/her qualities such as: good communication, self-examination, respect and a sense of honour. Also pray that s/he will have a godly lifestyle and seek the fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23)

Advice N°3: Pray for his/her soul

May the Lord grant him/her a wholesome, quality entourage, as well as companies that will help him/her grow and flourish. For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people (1 Corinthians 13:33).

Advice #4: Pray for his/her vision of marriage

It is important that the person has a good order of priorities according to the divine pattern. So, pray that s/he will be able to take care of his/her family and loved ones. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24).

As you pray for these requests, remember to ask the Lord to work on these same aspects within you, for we often attract who we are!
