PRAYER: Lord, Help Me To Avoid Tempting You, Because Tempting You Is A Foolish Thing To Do

I went to a zoo in Ibadan, Nigeria, many years ago, and was told the story of a prophet who stepped into the lion's cage to prove that he had the same ability as Daniel. Despite the fact that he was carrying a massive crucifix, the lion devoured him. One significant distinction between that man and Daniel is that the latter was put into the lions' den for appealing to God, not to provoke God. God, on the other hand, not only saved Daniel, but also rewarded him and vanquished his accusers (Daniel 6:1-26).

In Mark 16:18, it says:

“They shall take up serpents, and if they drink anything poisonous, it will not harm them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Does this imply that you should consume poison on purpose? No. In the text above, God is implying that if you are poisoned, the poison will not damage you.

Tempting God is a foolish thing to do. The devil prepared this trap for Jesus Christ in Matthew 4:5-7 when he told Him to leap off the temple's pinnacle, telling Him that the Bible declares God's angels will not let His foot to be crushed by a stone. Jesus got out of it by quoting Deuteronomy 6:16: "You shalt not tempt the Lord your God..."

Tempting God provokes His wrath and limits what He can do in His children's lives.

“How many times did they provoke him in the wilderness, and how many times did they grieve him in the desert!” They turned around and tempted God, limiting Israel's Holy One.” (Psalm 78:40, 41)

The children of Israel tempted God in the wilderness with their disbelief, grumbling, and idolatry, as we see in today's Bible reading. With the exception of Caleb and Joshua, who had faith in God, this curtailed God's plans for their life and kept them from accessing the Promised Land. Tempting God is a foolish thing to do. Are you attempting to tempt God?
