What does the Bible say about gambling?
Many people think that gambling is a sin? Even if there is not a clear cut verse from what we know in Scripture I believe it is a sin and all Christians should stay away from it. It is frightening to see that some churches bring gambling into the house of God. The Lord is not pleased.
Gambling is a difficult issue because if it is done in moderation and in combination, it is a waste of money, but it doesn’t have to be bad. People waste money on all activities. Gambling is no more or a waste of money than watching a movie (in many cases), eating unnecessarily expensive food, or buying something of no value. At the same time, the fact that money is wasted on other things does not justify gambling. Money is not wasted. Excess money should be saved for future needs or given to the work of the Lord, not gambled.
In addition, gambling can corrupt the work ethic that has been part of God's plan for mankind from the beginning. From time to time the Bible tells us to provide for our own needs and those of our families by doing productive work (Proverbs 31, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, 1 Timothy 5: 8). And that’s not all - Christians are also encouraged to work so that something can be shared with others (Ephesians 4:28). Gambling works against it by promising something that doesn’t matter. If you need more scriptural proof, see Genesis 2:15; Exodus 20: 9; Proverbs 12:11, 13: 4, 20: 4, 21:25, 28:19.
Then there is the problem of greed. In 1 Timothy 6: 9-10 the apostle Paul writes, "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many senseless and hurtful desires, which plunge men into destruction and ruin. For the love of money is the root of all evil. money is the root of all things. The closest thing to greed is the vice of covetousness, which is forbidden in the tenth Commandment (Exodus 20:17) .Of course, gambling is part of “getting rich quick” and getting resources of others without giving any cause in return.See Proverbs 15:27, 28:20; Matthew 6:31; Luke 12:15; Ephesians 5: 3; Colossians 3: 5; Hebrews 13: 5.
“Gambling can be as addictive as drugs and alcohol. Teenagers and their parents need to know that they are not just gambling with money, they are gambling with their lives. " - not known
There are many Bible verses about gambling that every Christian should know:
Galatians 5: 19-24 ESV
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; sexual immorality, uncleanness, depravity, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, dissensions, factions, divisions, envies, drunkenness, revellings, and so on. yet like this. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do so will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self -control; against those things there is no law.
Psalm 73: 1-28 ESV
A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But for me, my feet are almost slippery, and my steps are almost slippery. For I envied the proud, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pains until death; their bodies are fat and sweet. They are not in trouble as others; they were not beaten like other people.
Matthew 27: 35-45 ESV
And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. Then they sat and watched him there. And laid up their claim on his head, saying, This is Jesus the King of the Jews. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And those who passed by mocked him, shaking their heads.
Proverbs 1: 10-19 ESV
My son, if sinners flatter thee, suffer not. If they say, Come with us, let us wait for blood; Let us lay wait for the innocent without cause; I will swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole as those that go down into the pit; we will find all precious things, we will fill our houses with robbers; commit your lot among us; we all have a purse ”
