"It's Not Written In The Bible That A Christian Should Not Smoke" - Pastor Chris Oyekhilome

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, one of the Believers Love World General Overseers and a well-known Nigerian televangelist, has been answering a series of questions from young people all over the world.

Every day, hundreds of questions are submitted to the popular online program "Ask Pastor Chris," which is accessed from all over the world.

During one of the episodes, a young man from the United States of America inquired about the following: "Is there anything wrong with smoking cigarettes apart from the fact that it is a health hazard and a filthy habit, according to the Bible? If you are dealing with this question, please keep in mind that some people smoke because of the cold, and we eat other things that are equally harmful to our health, such as coffee and other caffeinated beverages."

According to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, who spoke in the video, he said:

"To find out what the Bible has to say about smoking, I've combed through it a number of times. There is nothing in the Bible that supports this position. So, what exactly is the issue with smoking? Now, I'll tell you about the dangers of smoking.

In fact, I've been asked this question a number of times and have attempted to prepare an answer. Whenever there are issues that are not as clear as one would expect, and when there is no specific scripture that tells you something specific about that very case, there is one clear thing we must follow from the Bible. Every time I tell someone to look at the pattern in the world and then look at the general sense of the scripture, they always seem to agree.

So the reason why I recommend that a Christian refrain from smoking is based on two considerations...

1. It is viewed negatively by the majority of the world's population as something filthy. Everybody, including those who are currently smoking it, considers it to be a filthy substance.

2. Smokers are not considered genuine converts by Christians, who consider smoking to be a filthy vice.

Regardless, it is not stated in the Bible that a Christian should not smoke, but I will read to you from Romans 14:13-14, which states, "A Christian should not smoke." "As a result, let us refrain from passing judgment on one another. As an alternative, resolve not to place any stumbling blocks or obstacles in your brother's path. As a believer in the Lord Jesus, I am completely convinced that nothing is unclean in and of itself, but that if someone considers something unclean, then it is unclean in his eyes, and vice versa."

On the face of it, cigarettes are harmless, but as verses 15 and 16 point out, there is nothing wrong with them in moderation "Your actions are no longer motivated by love if your brother is distressed as a result of what you eat. Make sure that you do not cause harm to your brother for whom Christ died. Do not allow what you believe to be good to be characterized as evil."

In other words, does smoking indicate that one is on his way to hell? No! His life, however, does not reflect God's Word, not because he smokes, but rather because he is engaging in an action that is unjustifiable within God's house and in the presence of his brothers and sisters in the faith."
