Genuine love for God promotes peace of heart

"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the low?"(Matt 22:36, NKJV)

The foundation of this passage is Deut. 6-4, 5, In verse 5 it says "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. This is known as the "Shema" or Jewish Creed taken from the first word "hear" in Hebrew The Shema is by far the most familiar, most quoted, and most copied Scripture passages in Judaism, In the days of lesus on earth, every faithful Jew recited the "Shema" twice daily-morning and evening, Even today pious Jews consider the "Shema" as one of their most sacred duties

According to our main text, love for God is the first and great commandment (v. 30). This is the summary of the Ten Commandments. Our love for God must be sincere, not in word and tongue only. The human "Heart" represents the control center of man's personality; the "Soul" represents the seat of man's breath and life or consciousness; the "Mind" is the seat of reasoning and understanding, and our "Strength represents all of one's bodily powers. Thus, the expression, heart, soul, mind and strength suggest that God is to be loved with all our powers and faculties, and that nothing is to be preferred to Him.

The "Love" referred to by Christ here is significant. The word "Love" in the Greek language is a particular kind of love, it is not just an affection or desire towards a person or something, it is far deeper in meaning than that. It is 'Agape" love. Agape is self-giving love. It implies a decision of the will to be committed to someone or something. It is an all-consuming love for God.

God demands first place in our lives. Do give Him first place today. He demands a devoted love (Rom. 13-9-10; 1 Cor. 13). Do devote your life and time to Him today. Love for God calls for a believer's total allegiance and loyalty to Him. It demands a firm and unwavering talth as well as wholehearted commitment to Him at all times. This will result in a loving relationship with our neighbours (v 31). Do you love God? Could you boldly say today, "I love God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength?"
