She is a black, mixed-race, transgender, and American Buddhist lady of color. Only 3% of the adherents of this faith are people of color. As a Japanese Zen teacher, she is just the second black woman to receive such an honorary title. For example, she has taken a stand against white nationalism and advocated for universal health care. Other Lgbtq church leaders are part of the seminary's leadership.
