Who are these end-of-the-world God's representatives described in Revelation? What are they going to do? What is the significance of the presence of two witnesses? Why will people be joyful when they die?
In the book of Revelation, God says: “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth” (Revelation 11:3).
“These are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands standing before the God of the earth,” the scripture in Revelation continues (verse 4).
This statement appears to be a continuation of a prophesy God delivered to the prophet Zechariah, demonstrating that God works through the power of His Spirit to fulfill His purposes (Zechariah 4:2-10).
Olive oil represents God's Holy Spirit, and God reminded Zerubbabel, the man in charge of the temple's restoration, to remember that spiritual things will be achieved by God's Spirit, not by his own efforts (verse 6).
Satan will use the beast and the false prophet as counterfeits to the two witnesses. As a result, Satan will continue to deceive the whole world through “signs, and lying wonders” and false religion.
The book of Revelation contains a description of the two witnesses' work: "And if anybody wishes to harm them, fire erupts from their mouth and devours their foes." And anybody who wishes to harm them shall be put to death in this manner. These have the ability to close the heavens so that no rain falls in the days of their prophesy; they also have the power to turn the rivers to blood and to strike the world with all plagues as frequently as they want” (Revelation 11:5-6).
As these God's representatives demonstrate to the world that all people need to repent of their sins, they will have access to God's Holy Spirit, which will enable them to perform miracles similar to those performed by past prophets of God during the 3½ years of their preaching.
The two witnesses' divine protection will be lifted when they finish their 3½year mission of proclaiming the gospel to the entire globe, and they will be killed.
“Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 11:7-10).
The joy over their deaths will be brief. God will raise them from the dead after 3½ days, and their enemies will witness their ascend into heaven.
