Mayor opposes 'Gqeberha' name for Port Elizabeth

Nqaba Bhanga opposes ‘Gqeberha’ name

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga says he has written to the Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa.

This is after new names for some parts of the Eastern Cape were announced about a week ago with Port Elizabeth’s name changing to Gqeberha.

According to Bhanga, the new names were not inclusive and had no isiXhosa meaning.

“While not disputing the need for geographical names that portray an inclusive country, I believe that these names have no relation to and/or connection to the people of our metro,” said Bhanga.

The DA’s leader in the Eastern Cape said he is happy that other political parties rally behind him on the issue.

Some of other name changes include

Uitenhage- Kariega

King Williams Town-Qonce

Maclear-Nqanqarhu
