Malema vows never to turn against African immigrants in exchange for votes
Speaking at an EFF press briefing on Tuesday, Malema said that he would rather “never be president of South Africa” than tell foreigners to “go home”.
The party leader responded at length to a question asked by an attending reporter regarding the topic of foreign immigrants, beginning, “Somebody said to me, if you want us to vote for you in 2024, you must abandon this thing of foreigners.
“I’m prepared to go, ‘no, I’m fine.’ I will never take a platform and denounce Africans. I’ll never do it.”
Immigration was a key issue at this month’s municipal elections. Newcomers ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, took a hardline stance against illegal immigrants and reaped the benefits of it.
The EFF meanwhile, was the only one of the big three parties to register growth at this election, garnering 10% of the vote – up from 8% in 2016.
Malema went on to take a thinly-veiled stab at Mashaba’s party, vowing that he would never take an anti-immigrant stance for the White vote.
“To take a platform to please White minority by pointing a finger at my other fellow Black brothers – I’m not going to do that,” he said.
In the elections, Mashaba’s party ate away at many of the DA’s votes – particularly in Johannesburg and Pretoria – largely because of his tough stance on immigration.
“When I see a Nigerian, a Congolese or Zimbabwean, I see myself,” said Malema.
Malema went on to say that he wouldn’t allow Zimbabweans to go back home and suffer from poverty.
