"The movement established thorough criteria for mayors, speakers, and other political office holders, with the goal of ensuring that talented, dedicated, and experienced leaders are appointed to these critical posts," ANC spokeswoman Pule Mabe said in a statement.
"Candidates must demonstrate a comprehension of municipal finances, administrative skills, familiarity with the local government regulatory environment, the ability to unify, direct, and motivate the municipality's leadership, and a commitment to serve communities.
"Above all, the ANC wants its deployees to be ethical leaders: honest, persons of integrity and high ethical standards; without a criminal record; without pending corruption allegations; and anchored and grounded in the society in which they live.
"Over the last week, 26 interview panels exposed over 600 mayoral aspirants to rigorous interviews for 206 metro, municipal, and district council seats."
