He said Action South Africa made a tag team with the Economic Freedom Fighters with the intent to keep ANC out of power. Action South Africa and EFF emerged as the king makers in three key metros namely, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane which saw them succeeding in removing ANC from the reigns of power.
Mashaba confirmed that the Democratic Alliance had contacted the party’s Gauteng provincial chairperson, John Moodey, requesting a meeting. He said the party mandated John Moodey to attend the meeting to listen to what DA has in mind.
"We shall await John’s feedback after the meeting," said Mashaba.
Moodey, who was a lead negotiator for Action South Africa during the coalition talks among political parties prior to the establishment of municipal councils, was previously informed by the DA negotiating team that they wouldn’t mind supporting Mashaba as mayor but they objected to his alliance with the EFF. This shocked Moodey and his team members because they never raised the question of Mashaba to be mayor.
Mashaba said they did not vote for the DA in order to get positions in return but merely to ensure the ANC was out of power.
"Let me be clear about ActionSA’ position. We didn’t vote for the DA to put them in a corner to negotiate with us, we voted for them to stop the ANC from taking over these municipalities. DA is under no obligation whatsoever to negotiate with us," Mashaba said.
The red beret leader, Julius Malema also shared the same sentiments when he revealed that they didn't vote for DA mayors because they want a coalition, but they did so because they wanted to see ANC kicked out of power.
