SA, Security cluster: Identifies Hotspots ahead of elections

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Group (JCPS) said South African law enforcement agencies are ready to keep the environment safe for the coming election days. 

Defense Secretary Thandi Modise said the National Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) continues to meet weekly to plan and analyze the security situation across the country.  

“Today we can confidently declare that all security measures have been implemented to create an environment that allows for free and fair elections from October 30th and 31st, 2021 (from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for special elections) and the elections on the 1st, ”Modise said at a press conference on Monday, October 25th. 

Natjoints has developed a security plan that ensures that the police are sufficiently visible in and around the polling stations on election day. Law enforcement presence is designed to deter and prevent crime and voter intimidation."In addition, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are deployed to provincial results centers to ensure the integrity of the results," said Modise. 

The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) and other law enforcement agencies are deployed along with law enforcement agencies across the country The Security Threat Assessment (ICC) found the situation in the country to be relatively stable, "resulting in free and fair elections" . The ICC threat assessment has resulted in each polling station being classified as high, medium or low risk and law enforcement resources being allocated accordingly.“All forms of crime will not be tolerated before, during and after the election period.We want to remind South Africans that inciting violence is also a criminal offense.Interfering in the work of IEC officers is also a criminal offense. 

"As a security group, we want to reassure the country that law enforcement agencies are available at every polling station to ensure that the democratic process is not disrupted in any way and that elections are held in a free, fair and safe environment," said Modise.
