Factional battles within the ANC have taken centre stage to such an extent that whenever one talks about the movement, it becomes difficult to talk about it without mentioning who belongs to which faction and for what reason.
Those aligned to the RET faction, claim they are the real custodians of the ANC and that Radical Economic Transformation is one of the fundamental policies of the movement.
RET forces are associated with former president Jacob Zuma because he is said to be the father of RET. These ANC comrades are always said to be opponents of Cyril Ramaphosa and whenever they point out some of the rot that is happening in government, they are dismissed as saboteurs trying to bring Ramaphosa down.
On the other hand, there's the CR faction which is rallying behind president Cyril Ramaphosa and want him to contest for a second term.
This faction tend to think that they are cleaning the mess that was allegedly created by former president Jacob Zuma, yet it is not entirely true as some of the comrades within this faction are corrupt as well.
If one is to wonder whether or not this is the type of ANC that former president Jacob Zuma or those late comrades have envisioned, the answer is definitely no. ANC veterans never envisioned a party that is so divided that the talk about unity and renewal is only seen as a joke within the current ANC leadership.
One of the ANC comrades argued that when former president Jacob Zuma was recalled, he stated that he doesn't want ANC to be divided in his name, and he warned that comrades must not nominate leaders in an attempt to please him.
"JZ’s life is the ANC. Resigning, he insisted he doesn’t want the ANC to be divided in his name. He openly campaigns for the ANC regardless who leads it.
Jail wouldn’t make him stop campaigning for the ANC. Endorse or reject ANC leaders not because you assume you’ll be pleasing Jacob Zuma," said the ANC comrade.
