DA desperate to question troubled mayor

The Democratic Alliance says it is waiting to question troubled Nelson Mandela Mayor Nqaba Bhanga would was recently involved in a car accident.

Bhanga was involved in a horror car accident.

Bhanga will have questions to answer to the party’s leaders and police when he is released from hospital. Both parties are investigating what led to the fatal accident.

Bhanga is also suspected of having broken lockdown regulations because the accident was reported to have happened after the 10pm curfew on Saturday last week.

Bhanga’s Mercedes collided with an Audi in which two people died. Police named them as Nonzwakazi Maho, 44, and Sandile Ronald Sicolo, 39.

DA federal council chair Helen Zille said the party was collecting evidence of what caused the accident.

She said Bhanga was conscious and able to communicate. This would allow the DA and police to complete their investigations.

“We have not yet been able to speak personally to Mr Bhanga. He was operated on, then in high care under sedation. His family is now visiting him, but not people from the party or the office. We are hoping to see him this weekend, and to gather more facts.”

She said there was no information about why Bhanga was driving during the lockdown curfew.

“Clearly that was a violation of the current lockdown regulations,” said Zille.

She said the DA understood that there was a case of culpable homicide being investigated. Police have not charged Bhanga.
