Will SA Remain Neutral in Russia-Ukraine War? Or will the US Secretary Convince us Otherwise?

The International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, is hosting US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, who will be launching his countries sub-saharan Africa strategy. Blinken who arrived on Sunday, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and South Africa having taken a neutral stance when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The state visit will take place in Pretoria and it will definitely be interesting to see where South Africa is in the strategy in a contest where, yes, the US and SA have many points of agreement but also there are also significant points of departure when it comes to geopolitical developments.

The point of departure is to go far back as March, where South Africa actually abstain from the vote in the UN security council and not joining 35 countries when it came to voting on wether or not then what was happening in Ukraine should be dubbed a crime against humanity. South Africa largely remaining neutral when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and it would be very interesting to see whether there is a change in time or another stance from the South African government in this regard.

Given the fact that looking at the super powers that being Russia and China, they have also been making a significant mark in Africa. The continent right now is basically a contested place in terms of not only just policy and trade relation but also raw material. Part of Blinken's visit here in SA to cement the trade relations and food security as a result of the Russia-Ukraine crises and so much more.
