LOVED AND LOST: Philip Mhlongo – it took courage to stand his ground against Zuma

Former EFF MP Phillip Mhlongo was one of the first to come out in support of Thabo Mbeki during the standoff in KZN ahead of the ANC elective conference in 2007. 2

He took that courageous stand with his brother Siyanda Mhlongo at a very dangerous moment in a province that was pro Jacob Zuma. 3

During that time most of the ANC members and leaders were totally opposed to Mbeki taking a third term as the ANC president and he was defeated by Zuma at the conference. 4

Mhlongo passed away on Tuesday at his home in Durban after a long illness. 5

After Mbeki’s loss in Polokwane, Mhlongo and many other prominent ANC members left to join the Congress of the People that was founded by Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa in 2008. 6

In 2013 Mhlongo joined the EFF and he was then made a member of Parliament.  7

He was notorious for his utterances in Parliament against the ANC and the DA. 8

In 2019 he was not returned to Parliament because the EFF leadership put him at number 49 on the list. 9

The instruction to drop him allegedly came after a fallout with the party’s top leadership. 10

But in one of the interviews Mhlongo revealed that after that instruction he had to abide by the rules of his leadership and he accepted it. 11

KZN Chairperson Vusi Khoza said, “We are still with the family to get more details on his passing. What I can tell you now is that he passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon,” said Khoza.  12
